The character 黄 (huáng) originally depicted a person wearing a jade pendant, symbolizing nobility and later came to represent the color yellow. In oracle bone script, it showed a human figure with an emphasized waist ornament. Over time, the character evolved through bronze script and seal script, gradually simplifying into its modern form while retaining the association with earth's central color in Chinese philosophy and imperial symbolism. Arrived in Japan: The character 黄 arrived in Japan during the 5th-6th centuries CE along with the introduction of Chinese writing system (kanji) through cultural exchanges with China and Korea, primarily via Buddhist texts and diplomatic missions during the Asuka and Nara periods.
