How this kanji evolved

Explore each form from the oldest known stage to today.

The character 魂 (hún) represents the 'soul' or 'spirit' in Chinese. It is composed of two elements: 云 (yún), meaning 'cloud,' and 鬼 (guǐ), meaning 'ghost' or 'demon.' The cloud component suggests something ethereal and intangible, while the ghost component represents the supernatural aspect of human existence. Together, they form the concept of the soul as an airy, spiritual essence that survives beyond physical death. In ancient Chinese belief, 魂 was one of two types of souls (the other being 魄, the corporeal soul), with 魂 representing the higher, conscious soul that ascends after death. Arrived in Japan: The character 魂 arrived in Japan around the 5th-6th centuries CE during the period when Chinese writing and Buddhism were systematically imported to Japan. It was adopted into Japanese as 'kon' or 'tamashii' and appears in early Japanese Buddhist texts and the Manyoshu poetry collection from the 8th century.
