Its structure consists of two primary components: the semantic element "頁" (けつ - *ketsu*), which represents a person with an emphasized head, symbolizing "head" or "person," and the phonetic element "予" (よ - *yo*), which provides the sound. The original core meaning was "to place in someone's care" or "to entrust to a person," a concept directly conveyed by the "person" (頁) radical. Historically, the character's development is not pictographic but abstract. The "予" component itself is an ancient character originally depicting a shuttle on a loom, but in "預," it functions purely phonetically. Over time in China, the meaning solidified around the act of entrusting or depositing something for safekeeping. This character, along with the vast majority of the kanji system, was introduced to Japan in waves, primarily through the importation of Chinese Buddhist sutras and classical texts from around the 5th to 8th centuries AD. The Japanese adopted its meaning and Sino-Japanese readings (*on'yomi*), such as "yo." A key linguistic note is the conceptual link between "預ける" (azukeru - to deposit/entrust) and "預かる" (azukaru - to be entrusted with/to take into custody). This verb pair perfectly illustrates the two sides of the depository relationship that the single kanji "預" encompasses. This reflects the character's inherent meaning of a transaction involving trust and temporary transfer of custody, a nuance that has been fully preserved and remains central to its modern usage in Japanese, especially in financial terms like 預金 (*yokin* - savings deposit).
