The kanji 鋳 is a phono-semantic compound, formed by combining the semantic component 金 (metal) with the phonetic component 壽 (longevity, now simplified to 寿). The character was created in China during the Warring States period or early Han dynasty to specifically represent the process of melting and pouring metal into a mold. The original meaning is precisely "to cast metal." The component 金 clearly indicates the material involved, while 壽 (shou) was chosen for its sound, as its ancient pronunciation was close to the word for casting. Historically, 鋳 evolved from earlier, more pictographic forms. Its precursor in bronze script sometimes depicted a man pouring molten metal from a ladle into a mold, but this complex form was standardized into the compound structure we see today in clerical script (隷書). This standardization solidified during the Han dynasty, and the character has remained largely unchanged in its traditional form since then. The modern Japanese simplification replaced the complex 壽 with 寿, creating the shinjitai 鋳. The character, along with the vast majority of the kanji system, was introduced to Japan between the 5th and 8th centuries CE, primarily through the importation of Chinese Buddhist sutras, Confucian classics, and other written materials. It was adopted into the Japanese language, taking on the Sino-Japanese readings "chū" from the Chinese phonetic and the native Japanese kun'yomi "i(ru)" for the verb "to cast." A key linguistic note is that the phonetic component 壽 is also used in other characters like 籌 (chip, tally) and 濤 (large wave), but in 鋳, its function is purely phonetic, linking the character to the specific auditory profile of the word for casting. This character is central to terms describing metalworking, such as 鋳物 (casting), 鋳型 (mold), and 鋳造 (minting or casting), reflecting its enduring industrial and artistic significance.
