The character 貝 (shell) originated as a pictograph of a seashell, as seen in oracle bone script where it clearly depicted the two halves of a shell with visible markings. In ancient China, shells were used as currency, which is why 貝 appears in many characters related to wealth and trade, such as 買 (buy), 賣 (sell), and 財 (wealth). Over time, the character simplified while retaining its distinctive shell-like shape. Arrived in Japan: The character 貝 arrived in Japan during the Yayoi period (300 BCE - 300 CE) through cultural exchange with China, likely brought via the Korean Peninsula. It was formally incorporated into the Japanese writing system during the 5th century CE when Chinese characters were systematically introduced to Japan by scholars.
