How this kanji evolved

Explore each form from the oldest known stage to today.

The kanji 西 originates from a pictograph of a bird's nest. In ancient oracle bone script, it depicted a woven nest with a simplified bird shape inside or atop it. This original meaning is preserved in the kanji 棲 (to dwell), which incorporates 西 as a phonetic component carrying its nest-related meaning. The character's association with "west" is a phonetic loan (仮借, kasha), where the original pictograph was borrowed to represent a word with a similar pronunciation but unrelated meaning. The character evolved significantly through different script forms. The oracle bone script (甲骨文) showed a clear, rounded nest shape. By the bronze script (金文) period, the form became more stylized and abstract. The clerical script (隷書) of the Qin and Han dynasties regularized the character into the rectangular, horizontal-line heavy form that directly led to the modern standard script (楷書). The transformation from a recognizable nest to the modern 西 is a classic example of pictorial abstraction. This kanji, along with the entire Chinese writing system, was introduced to Japan in waves, primarily from the 5th century AD onward via Korean peninsula intermediaries and later directly from China. It was incorporated into the Japanese language as a logogram, read with the Sino-Japanese on'yomi reading "セイ" and later "サイ", as well as the native kun'yomi "にし". As one of the cardinal directions, 西 is a fundamental character in Japanese. It forms part of important compound words and place names, such as 関西 (Kansai), and is integral to the cultural directionality where west is associated with the setting sun, the end of the day, and in Buddhist context, the Western Paradise (極楽, gokuraku).
