The character 程 originated in ancient China during the Warring States period. It is composed of 禾 (grain) and 呈 (to present/submit), originally meaning 'a measure' or 'standard.' In ancient times, it referred to standardized measures for grain, representing fairness and regulation in distribution. Over time, its meaning expanded to include concepts of journey (路程), procedure (過程), and extent (程度), reflecting how measurement standards evolved into broader notions of order and progression. Arrived in Japan: The character 程 arrived in Japan during the 5th-6th centuries CE, along with the broader introduction of Chinese writing systems (kanji) through cultural exchange with China and the Korean peninsula. It was formally adopted into the Japanese writing system and appears in early Japanese texts such as the Manyoshu (8th century), where it was used both for its meaning and in Japanese phonetic readings.
