The phonetic component is "農" (nō), which means "farming" or "agriculture." The original meaning was "thick liquid" or "dense," as in a rich, concentrated fluid. The association with "農" is not directly related to farming's meaning but was chosen for its sound to represent the pronunciation, guiding the reader to the intended word for "concentrated." Historically, the character evolved from its Bronze Script and Seal Script forms, where the elements were more pictographically distinct, into the standardized clerical and kaisho (regular script) forms used today.
