How this kanji evolved

Explore each form from the oldest known stage to today.

The character 漁 (fishing) evolved from ancient pictographs showing hands manipulating fishing nets in water. In Liushutong, L02570 shows a primitive form with 水 (water) and 魚 (fish) components, representing the act of catching fish. Over time, the character standardized to its current form, combining 氵(water radical) with 魚 (fish), perfectly capturing the essence of fishing as harvesting fish from water. The character's meaning expanded metaphorically to describe 'fishing for' information or profits. Arrived in Japan: The character 漁 arrived in Japan during the Yayoi period (300 BCE - 300 CE) through cultural exchange with China, likely via the Korean peninsula. It was formally incorporated into the Japanese writing system during the Asuka period (538-710 CE) when Japan systematically adopted Chinese characters, and appears in early Japanese texts like the Man'yōshū (8th century).
