The kanji "桟" (pronounced さん, せん in Sino-Japanese readings) is a phono-semantic compound character, formed during the clerical script evolution in China. Its semantic component is the "木" (ki) radical, meaning "wood" or "tree," which directly relates to its meaning. The phonetic component is "戔" (pronounced さん or せん), which provides a sound clue but also contributes a meaning of "narrow" or "to wound." The original concept was of a narrow, wooden structure—a scaffold, a simple bridge, or a pier—constructed from wooden planks. Historically, the character 桟 evolved from the character "棧," which is its orthodox and more complex form. "棧" itself was a later development, clarifying the wooden nature of the structure. The primary meaning was a wooden framework, such as a footbridge built along the face of a cliff (a "plank road") or a temporary landing stage over water. The simplification to "桟" is a form of cursive-script abbreviation that was later officially adopted in Japan's Tōyō Kanji list post-WWII to promote easier writing. In China, the simplified character 栈 carries the same etymology and meaning. The character, along with the vast majority of the Chinese writing system, was introduced to Japan via the Korean peninsula around the 5th century AD, as part of cultural imports that included Buddhism and classical Chinese texts. It was integrated into the Japanese language, retaining its core meaning of a wooden framework or pier. A culturally significant application of this kanji is in the historical "Shūseidō" or "Kakehashi," referring to the perilous wooden plank roads built along gorges and mountainsides, which were as structurally significant and precarious as a jetty extending over water. This shared concept of a narrow, projecting wooden walkway unites its meanings of a mountain path, a scaffold, and a pier.
