The character 時 (time) evolved from ancient oracle bone script depicting the sun (日) moving through the sky, combined with 寺 (temple/court) which originally represented a hand making markings to track the sun's position. This composite character symbolized the measurement and observation of time through solar movement. Over centuries, it simplified to its modern form while retaining the sun radical and temple component, representing the concept of time as something measured and observed, particularly in agricultural and ritual contexts where tracking seasons was crucial. Arrived in Japan: The character 時 arrived in Japan during the 5th-6th centuries CE, primarily through the introduction of Chinese writing systems via Korean peninsula. It became established during the Asuka period (538-710 CE) when Japan systematically adopted Chinese characters (kanji) along with Buddhism, Confucian texts, and Chinese calendrical systems that required precise time measurement concepts.
