How this kanji evolved

The kanji 整 is a phono-semantic compound character, formed by combining the phonetic component 敕 (chì) with the semantic component 正 (zhèng). The character 正 originally depicted a foot 止 moving toward a target 一, conveying meanings of "correct," "proper," or "straight." The component 敕 itself is a compound meaning "to correct" or "an imperial order," composed of 束 (to bind, bundle) and 攵 (a hand holding a stick, indicating action). Therefore, 整 essentially means "to correct and make proper," which semantically extends to "arrange" and "organize." Historically, the character 整 first appeared in bronze inscriptions and small seal script during the Zhou and Qin dynasties in China. Its structure has remained remarkably consistent, evolving from the more pictographically complex forms of ancient script to the standardized, squared form used in modern regular script (kaisho). The core concept has always revolved around imposing order, correctness, and proper arrangement onto something, aligning with the meaning of its constituent parts. The character was introduced to Japan, along with the broader Chinese writing system, most likely between the 5th and 6th centuries CE, primarily through the importation of Chinese cultural and Buddhist texts. It was integrated into the Japanese language as a kanji, adopting its Sino-Japanese on'yomi reading of "sei" (as in 整理 seiri, "organization") while also being used in native Japanese kun'yomi compounds like 整える (totonoceru, "to arrange"). A notable linguistic point is that while 整 carries a meaning of meticulous, proper arrangement, it is distinct from other "arrange" kanji like 調 (which implies adjusting or tuning) or 片付ける (which implies tidying up), emphasizing a sense of comprehensive order and correctness.
