The phonetic component is 卬 (gōu/gatsu in Japanese on'yomi, meaning "to raise" or "I/me"). This combination creates a meaning paradox; the hand radical suggests a downward action, while the phonetic suggests an upward motion. This contradiction is resolved in the core meaning of "to press down," as the character represents using a hand to push down or restrain something that is rising or resisting, hence "suppress," "repress," or "restrain." Historically, the character's development is not pictographic but entirely abstract and compositional. It first appeared in seal script (篆書) as a standardized form. The original use of 卬 itself was a compound of 匕 (a person kneeling) and 卩 (another person kneeling), representing two figures facing each other, which evolved to convey a sense of opposition or resistance. By incorporating the hand radical, 抑 specifically came to denote the physical act of subduing this resistance. Over time, the character evolved through clerical script (隷書) to the modern kaisho (楷書) form, with its structure remaining largely consistent.
