How this kanji evolved

Explore each form from the oldest known stage to today.

The kanji 寝 is a phono-semantic compound, combining a semantic element with a phonetic one. Its predecessor in oracle bone and bronze inscriptions was a purely pictographic character, 㝲, depicting a house (宀) with a broom (帚) inside, representing the act of cleaning and then resting in a room. This original form emphasized the preparation of a space for rest. By the small seal script period, the character evolved into its modern form by incorporating the component 爿 (which represents a bed or a piece of wood) and the phonetic component 㬱 (qīn), which has since corrupted to 侵. The "bed" radical (爿) explicitly linked the character to the concept of reclining. Historically, the character's development shows a clear shift from a general concept of indoor rest to a specific association with sleeping in a bed. The small seal script form, standardized in China during the Qin dynasty (221–206 BC), is the direct ancestor of the modern 寝. This standardized form, along with thousands of others, was introduced to Japan in waves, primarily through the importation of Chinese texts like the *Analects of Confucius* and the *Thousand Character Classic* around the 5th to 6th centuries AD. It was adopted into the Japanese writing system as a *kanji*, Linguistically, 寝 carries the core meaning of "to sleep" or "to lie down," but its usage in Japanese has interesting nuances. It can refer to the state of being asleep (寝ている, *neteiru*) and is also used in compounds like 就寝 (shūshin, "going to bed") and 寝室 (shinshitsu, "bedroom"). A notable cultural and linguistic note is the distinction between 寝る (*neru*, to lie down to sleep) and 眠る (*nemuru*, to be asleep). Furthermore, the original form 寢 is the kyūjitai (old character form), while 寝 is the shinjitai (new character form) adopted in Japan post-WWII, demonstrating the continued evolution of the character even after its arrival.
