How this kanji evolved

Explore each form from the oldest known stage to today.

The character 学 (xué) originally depicted two hands arranging counting rods above a roof, symbolizing the act of learning and calculation. In its earliest oracle bone script forms, it represented the concept of acquiring knowledge through practice. During the bronze script period, it evolved to include a child (子) component, emphasizing that learning begins in childhood. The modern kanji 学 retains this structure - the top part derives from the ancient symbol for hands arranging knowledge, while the bottom 子 represents the student. Throughout Chinese history, this character has embodied the Confucian ideal of lifelong learning and scholarly pursuit. Arrived in Japan: The character 学 arrived in Japan during the 5th-6th centuries CE, primarily through Buddhist scriptures and Chinese classical texts brought by Korean scholars and Japanese envoys to China. It was systematically adopted during the Asuka period (538-710 CE) as part of the broader introduction of Chinese writing and Confucian educational principles to Japan.
