The character 北 originally depicted two people standing back-to-back, representing the concept of 'back' or 'to turn away.' In ancient China, it symbolized opposition and separation. Over time, its meaning shifted to 'north' because in traditional Chinese architecture, palaces and homes typically faced south, making the back side (where people turned away from the main entrance) the northern direction. This evolution from 'back' to 'north' reflects how cultural practices influenced character meanings. Arrived in Japan: The character 北 arrived in Japan during the Yayoi period (around 300 BCE to 300 CE) through cultural exchange with China, likely via Korean Peninsula intermediaries. It was systematically introduced along with other Chinese characters during the 5th-6th centuries CE when Japanese scholars began studying Chinese writing systems more formally.
