How this kanji evolved

Explore each form from the oldest known stage to today.

The character 響 (sound, echo) evolved from ancient pictographs showing sound vibrations. It combines 音 (sound) with 郷 (village, community), originally depicting sound echoing through a village or community. In Liushutong, the character appears in various forms showing sound waves radiating outward. Over time, it standardized to its current form, maintaining the core meaning of reverberating sound that travels and resonates through space. Arrived in Japan: The character 響 arrived in Japan during the Yayoi period (300 BCE - 300 CE) or early Kofun period, likely through the introduction of Chinese texts and Buddhist scriptures. It became firmly established in the Japanese writing system by the Nara period (710-794 CE) when the Japanese began systematically adopting Chinese characters for writing their language.
