How this kanji evolved

Explore each form from the oldest known stage to today.

The kanji 連 is a phono-semantic compound character, formed by the semantic component 辶 (the "movement" or "road" radical, a variant of 辵) and the phonetic component 車 (cart, vehicle). Its original meaning in ancient Chinese was "a vehicle pulled by people," which is the sense recorded in the foundational etymological text, the Shuowen Jiezi. The combination of "movement" and "cart" logically evokes the idea of a procession or something being pulled along, leading to its core meanings of "to connect" and "to take along." Historically, the character's form has stabilized significantly. Oracle bone and bronze script versions show a clearer depiction of a cart (車) connected to a road or movement (辶), sometimes illustrated as four men pulling a cart. This pictographic representation solidified into the small seal script form, which was then regularized into the clerical script and eventually the modern kaishu (standard script) form used today. The evolution streamlined the components, making the connection between the radical and phonetic less pictorially obvious but structurally consistent. The character, along with the vast majority of the kanji system, was introduced to Japan in waves, primarily from the 5th to the 8th centuries AD, through cultural contact with the Korean peninsula and direct missions to China. It was adopted into the Japanese writing system as part of the on'yomi (Chinese-reading) vocabulary. A key linguistic note is the semantic shift and specialization in Japanese. While retaining the core idea of connection (e.g., 連絡, *renraku* - contact), it also developed the specific usage for a group or party (e.g., パーティーに連れていく, *pātī ni tsurete iku* - to take someone along to a party). This reflects how Japan adapted Chinese characters to fit its own linguistic and cultural needs, expanding and refining the original etymological concepts.
