How this kanji evolved

Explore each form from the oldest known stage to today.

The kanji 躍 is a phono-semantic compound character formed during the Warring States period or early Han dynasty in China. Its semantic component is the "foot" radical 足, which indicates the character's meaning is related to the feet or a foot action. The phonetic component is 翟 (dí in modern Mandarin, originally depicting a pheasant with long tail feathers), which provided the approximate pronunciation (yak-u in Old Japanese, yuè in Middle Chinese) and also contributed a connotative meaning. A pheasant, when startled, bursts into flight with a sudden, leaping motion, which perfectly complements the "foot" radical to express the concept of a vigorous, springing leap or jump. Historically, the character 躍 evolved from the seal script (篆文) form, which standardized the placement of the 足 radical on the left and the 翟 component on the right. This structure was maintained through clerical script (隷書) and into the regular script (楷書) used today. The character was transmitted to Japan in waves, primarily between the 5th and 8th centuries AD, via Buddhist scriptures, classical Chinese texts, and official diplomatic missions. It was incorporated into the Japanese writing system, retaining its core meaning of "to leap." An interesting linguistic note is the survival of the character's ancient connotative meaning in modern Japanese vocabulary. While 躍る means "to leap" physically, it is also used in words like 躍起 (yakki, "frantic" or "eager") and 躍進 (yakushin, "rapid advance"), where the sense of a sudden, energetic, and dynamic movement is preserved metaphorically. This demonstrates how the original semantic fusion of a foot action (足) with the explosive movement of a pheasant (翟) continues to influence the character's usage millennia after its creation.
