The character 詩 (poetry) evolved from ancient Chinese pictographs and ideographs. It consists of two components: 言 (speech/language) and 寺 (temple/court). Originally, 寺 represented a government office where official documents were kept. Combined with 言, it came to mean 'regulated speech' or 'formal expression' - the essence of classical poetry. Over centuries, 詩 evolved from referring to courtly odes and official hymns to encompass all forms of poetic expression, capturing the Chinese tradition of poetry as refined, structured language that conveys deep emotion and cultural values. Arrived in Japan: The character 詩 arrived in Japan during the 5th-6th centuries CE along with the broader introduction of Chinese writing and literature. It became firmly established during the Nara period (710-794) when Japanese scholars were actively studying Chinese poetic forms, particularly through works like the Classic of Poetry (詩經). The character was incorporated into Japanese as 'shi' and became central to Japanese poetic traditions, including kanshi (Chinese-style poetry written by Japanese poets).
