The character 盾 (dùn) originally depicted a shield used for protection in battle. In its earliest oracle bone script forms, it showed a rectangular shield with a central handle. Over time, the character evolved through bronze script to its current form, maintaining the rectangular shield shape at the top while the lower part simplified. The character has consistently meant 'shield' or 'protection' throughout Chinese history, and by extension came to represent anything that provides defense or cover. Arrived in Japan: The character 盾 arrived in Japan during the Yayoi period (300 BCE - 300 CE) or early Kofun period (300-538 CE) through cultural exchange with China and the Korean peninsula, likely as part of the introduction of Chinese writing systems and military technology. It was incorporated into the Japanese language with the same meaning of 'shield' (たて, tate).
