The character 目 originated as a pictograph of an eye in oracle bone script, depicting a horizontal eye with a pupil in the center. Over time, it evolved through bronze script and seal script into its modern rectangular form. As a radical, 目 appears in many characters related to vision and perception, such as 看 (to look), 相 (appearance), and 睡 (to sleep). Beyond its literal meaning of 'eye,' 目 also carries extended meanings including 'item,' 'category,' and 'point of view,' reflecting how the eye organizes and interprets the world. Arrived in Japan: The character 目 arrived in Japan during the early centuries CE, likely between the 1st and 5th centuries, as part of the introduction of Chinese writing to Japan through cultural exchange, Buddhist texts, and Korean scribes. It was fully incorporated into the Japanese writing system by the Nara period (710-794 CE) and remains in use today with the same meaning and similar pronunciations in Sino-Japanese vocabulary.
