Originally depicting a person with a weapon (匕) looking back in hesitation, it evolved through bronze script where it showed a person holding a staff at a crossroads, uncertain which path to take. By small seal script, it became more standardized with components representing hesitation and confusion. The character embodies the concept of doubt, suspicion, and uncertainty - literally showing someone frozen in indecision. Over time, the graphical elements simplified while retaining the core meaning of mental hesitation and questioning. Arrived in Japan: The character 疑 arrived in Japan during the 5th-6th centuries CE, primarily through the introduction of Chinese writing systems and Buddhist texts.
