How this kanji evolved

The kanji 残 is a phono-semantic compound character, formed by combining the phonetic component 戔 (せん/sen) with the semantic component 歹 (がつ/gatsu). The component 歹 originally depicted a cracked bone fragment (歺) and carries meanings related to death, decay, and bad omens. The phonetic element 戔, which depicts two weapons (戈) and implies cutting or harming, also contributes to the meaning. The combined form 殘 originally signified "to injure or kill," "to destroy," or "to be cruel," from which the sense of something being "left over" or "remaining" naturally evolved, as what is left after a destructive event. Historically, the character's development can be traced from its oracle bone script origins through seal script (小篆) standardization. In ancient Chinese texts, the core meaning was the act of harming or the state of being mutilated. Over time, the semantic focus shifted from the destructive action itself to its consequence—that which survives or is left behind. This conceptual evolution from "to damage" to "remainder" is paralleled in other languages, where a word for "to leave" can develop from a root meaning "to let remain." The character 残, along with the vast majority of the kanji system, was introduced to Japan in several waves, primarily through the importation of Chinese texts such as Buddhist sutras and classical works during the 5th to 8th centuries. It was adopted into the Japanese writing system, retaining its core meanings. An interesting linguistic note is the persistence of its dual connotations in modern Japanese. It is used in words like 残る (nokoru, "to remain") and 残業 (zangyō, "overtime work"), but it also retains its darker, original nuance in terms like 残酷 (zankoku, "cruelty") and 残虐 (zangyaku, "atrocious"), directly linking back to its ancient semantic roots of harm and destruction.
