The kanji "斜" (sha, naname) is a phono-semantic compound, formed during the era of Small Seal script standardization in China. Its structure combines a semantic and a phonetic component. The left element 余 (yo) primarily serves as the phonetic component, indicating the character's pronunciation. The right element 斗 (to) is the semantic component, representing a "ladle" or a unit of volume for measuring grain. The original meaning was to dip a ladle into a container to scoop out its contents. This specific, angled action of the ladle is the conceptual origin for the abstract meaning of "diagonal," "slanted," or "inclined." Historically, the character evolved from earlier forms found on bronze inscriptions, which showed a clearer pictorial representation of a hand holding a ladle (斗) near a container or vat. This pictographic idea was later stylized and regularized into the 余 and 斗 components we see today in the Small Seal script. The clerical script (隷書) of the Han dynasty further abstracted these shapes, solidifying the modern form that was eventually adopted by the standard script (楷書). This character, along with the vast majority of the kanji system, was introduced to Japan in several waves, primarily from the 5th to the 8th centuries AD, via cultural contact with the Korean peninsula and direct missions to Tang China. It was imported as part of the Chinese writing system and integrated into the Japanese language, retaining its core meaning of "diagonal." A notable linguistic note is that while the Sino-Japanese reading is "sha," the native Japanese kun'yomi is "naname," which interestingly also carries the nuanced meaning of "being askew" or "not being standard," sometimes extending metaphorically to mean "partiality" or "bias."
