How this kanji evolved

Explore each form from the oldest known stage to today.

The kanji "怖" (fū, fu, kowa-i) is a phono-semantic compound, formed by combining a semantic element with a phonetic one. The character is composed of the semantic component 忄, a variant of the "heart" or "mind" radical (心), which indicates that the character's meaning is related to a psychological or emotional state. The right-hand component 布 (fu) primarily serves a phonetic function, providing the sound "fu" to the character, but it also carries a secondary semantic association. 布 means "cloth" or "to spread," and in this context, it evokes the idea of a feeling of fear spreading or pervading through one's heart. Historically, "怖" is not an ancient character found on oracle bones. It is a later creation that emerged during the era of Small Seal Script. It was created to represent the abstract concept of fear and is considered a derivative or a specific application of the more general character 恐 (kyō, osore-ru), which also means "fear" or "dread." The development of "怖" allowed for a nuanced distinction in writing, often conveying a sense of fright or being scared, as opposed to the deeper awe or terror sometimes associated with 恐. The character evolved through the standard script forms—Clerical Script (隷書) and Kaisho (楷書)—into its modern, standardized shape. This character, along with the vast majority of the Japanese writing system, was imported from China to Japan in waves, primarily from the 5th to the 8th centuries AD via Buddhist scriptures, classical Chinese texts, and official diplomatic exchanges. It was integrated into the Japanese language through the process of *ondoku* (reading based on Chinese pronunciation) and *kundoku* (reading by assigning Japanese native words). The Sino-Japanese readings "fu" and "fū" derive from the Chinese phonetic value of the time, while the native Japanese kun'yomi "kowa-i" is attached to the character's meaning. A notable linguistic point is that "怖" is part of a group of kanji where the phonetic component 布 is consistently read as "fu" in on'yomi, as seen in other characters like 敷 (shiku, to spread) and 府 (fu, urban prefecture).
