How this kanji evolved

The kanji "幕" is a phono-semantic compound, formed by combining the radical "巾" (cloth) with the phonetic component "莫". The character originated in China during the Warring States period. "莫" itself is a compound, depicting the sun (日) setting behind vegetation (茻), originally meaning "evening" or "nothing," and here it primarily provides its ancient pronunciation. The radical "巾" explicitly denotes that the character's meaning is related to a piece of cloth, thus creating the meaning of a "curtain" or "drapery." Historically, the character evolved from earlier pictographic forms seen on bronze inscriptions into the clerical script (隷書) style during the Han dynasty, which standardized the structure into the modern form. The original concept of "幕" was a large piece of cloth or tent hanging used to separate spaces, such as military tents or theatrical curtains. This evolved to encompass metaphorical meanings like an "act" in a play, signifying the curtain that divides performances. "幕" was introduced to Japan via Korea, most systematically during the Asuka and Nara periods (6th to 8th centuries) alongside the importation of Chinese literature, Buddhism, and governmental systems. It was incorporated into the Japanese writing system as a kanji with its original form and meaning intact. A significant cultural note is the term "幕府" (bakufu), meaning "tent government," which became the name for the Japanese shogunate. This term originated from the field headquarters of a military commander and semantically extended to refer to the shogun's administration, powerfully illustrating how the concept of a physical curtain evolved to denote a seat of political power.
