The character 宝 (treasure) evolved from ancient pictographs showing a house (宀) containing precious objects like cowrie shells (貝) and jade (玉). In its earliest forms found in oracle bone script, it depicted a roof over cowrie shells, which were used as currency in ancient China. Over time, the character simplified and standardized, with the modern form combining the radical for 'roof' with the character for 'jade' - representing valuable objects protected under one's roof. The character embodies the concept of precious possessions, valuables, and things of great worth. Arrived in Japan: The character 宝 was likely introduced to Japan during the 5th-6th centuries CE, when the Japanese writing system was being developed through cultural exchange with China. It appears in early Japanese texts like the Manyōshū (8th century) and was incorporated into the Japanese writing system as a regular-use kanji, pronounced as 'takara' in native Japanese reading and 'hō' in Sino-Japanese reading.
