Culturally, "塚" is significant in both China and Japan, almost exclusively referring to a burial mound or tumulus. It is commonly used in words like 古墳 (kofun, ancient tomb mound) and in the names of specific historical burial sites. A notable linguistic note is the distinction between "塚" and the similar character "冢." While "冢" is the original form and means "mound," "塚" was created to specifically emphasize an *earthen* mound by adding the 土 radical. In modern Japanese usage, "塚" is the standard character, whereas "冢" is rarely used, often considered its variant or archaic form.
