The character 命 (mìng) evolved from ancient oracle bone script where it combined 令 (lìng, meaning 'to command') with 口 (kǒu, meaning 'mouth'), representing the concept of 'issuing commands verbally.' Over time, it came to mean 'life,' 'fate,' or 'destiny,' reflecting the ancient belief that one's lifespan and fortune were decreed by heaven. The character embodies the philosophical idea that life itself is a mandate from a higher power. Arrived in Japan: The character 命 arrived in Japan around the 5th-6th centuries CE during the period when Chinese writing and Buddhism were systematically imported to Japan. It was adopted into Japanese as 'inochi' (life) and 'mei' (command, fate), appearing in early Japanese texts like the Kojiki (712 CE) and Manyoshu (8th century).
