How this kanji evolved

Explore each form from the oldest known stage to today.

The kanji 務 is a phono-semantic compound, formed during the Warring States period and standardized in the clerical script of the Han dynasty. Its semantic component is 力, meaning "strength" or "effort." The phonetic component is 敄 (wù), which itself is a compound of 矛 ("halberd") and 攵 (a variant of 攴, "to strike"). The original meaning conveyed by 敄 was "to exert strenuously" or "to be diligent." Therefore, the core etymological meaning of 務 is "a matter requiring strenuous effort or diligence," which naturally evolved into "task," "duty," or "business." Historically, the character's development shows a clear evolution from its ancient forms. Early seal scripts depict the distinct elements of 矛 and 力, emphasizing the concept of martial or intense effort. As it progressed into clerical and then standard kaisho script, the structure streamlined into the modern form 務, but the fundamental composition remained intact. The character did not originate in Japan; it was introduced to Japan around the 5th century AD, primarily through the importation of Chinese classical texts like the Confucian classics and legal codes, which used the character to denote official duties and essential affairs. An interesting linguistic note is the enduring connection between the character's composition and its meaning. While the phonetic component 敄 is now obsolete as an independent character, its meaning of strenuous exertion is permanently fused into 務. This distinguishes 務 from similar kanji like 事 (thing, matter) or 任 (responsibility), as 務 inherently carries a nuance of something that is one's specific, focused mission or an endeavor requiring dedicated effort to accomplish.
